Triglycerides are a type of fat in your blood. Your body converts extra calories into triglycerides and stores them in fat cells, then releases them later as energy between meals. The American Heart Association uses these fasting categories: Normal (below 150 mg/dL), Borderline High (150 to 199 mg/dL), High (200 to 499 mg/dL), and Very High (500 mg/dL or above). This study is enrolling adults whose fasting triglycerides are confirmed at 500 mg/dL or higher at two separate visits.
Common causes include Type 2 diabetes, obesity, an underactive thyroid, kidney disease, excessive alcohol use, and a diet high in carbohydrates, processed foods, or added sugars. Inherited (genetic) conditions and certain medications can also raise triglyceride levels. This Phase 2 study is testing a new injectable treatment to see how it works for adults whose triglycerides remain at 500 mg/dL or higher despite stable use of standard lipid-lowering medications such as statins, fibrates, or omega-3 fatty acids.
No. Hypertriglyceridemia means you have too many triglycerides in your blood. Hypercholesterolemia means you have too much cholesterol. Both are lipid conditions and many people have both at once, but they involve different fats and are treated differently. Severe hypertriglyceridemia refers to fasting triglycerides of 500 mg/dL or higher. This study focuses specifically on adults with severe hypertriglyceridemia, not on cholesterol management.
People with severe hypertriglyceridemia face an increased risk of acute pancreatitis, an inflammation of the pancreas that requires medical care. Very high triglycerides are also linked to heart disease. Many adults achieve normal levels with diet, exercise, and medicine, but some still struggle to reach safe levels. This study is exploring whether a new injectable treatment can help adults whose triglycerides remain very high despite their current therapy.
The study involves only 2 injections, given at Week 0 and Week 12, with health checks throughout the study period. Insurance is not required. Qualifying participants may receive compensation of up to $1,933 for their time and travel. To start, answer the 5 short questions on this page.
